The early days of the Humvee was through a contract with the military for a 'High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle' or HMMWV. This is where the name 'Humvee' came from, which eventually morphed into 'Hummer'.
AM General, a subsidiary of AMC, started producing a civilian version of the U.S. military's Humvee (which replaced the military jeep) in 1992. General Motors then bought the brand and changed it into the 'Hummer'. This included the H1, which was also based on the Humvee military vehicle, and the H2 and H3, which were modified into a more consumer friendly and civilian style SUV or truck.
Starting in 2008 the Hummer became less of a concern because of the shape of the economy and its own viability in the market. The last Hummer was made in 2010.
